Welcoming a premature baby into the world is an emotional and powerful experience. These tiny warriors may arrive earlier than expected, but they are just as deserving of love, celebration, and cherished memories.
As a professional newborn photographer based in Leichhardt, Sydney, I’ve had the honour of photographing many premature babies and understand how to create a safe, gentle, and personalised experience for each little one and their family.
💛 Can You Photograph Premature Babies?
Yes, absolutely! Premature babies can be photographed—safely, beautifully, and meaningfully. Every baby is unique, and so is their journey. When photographing preemies, I take extra care to adjust the session based on their health, development, and corrected age (not just birth date).
The session is never rushed, and everything is guided by your baby’s comfort and safety.

📅 When Is the Best Time for a Preemie Session?
For full-term babies, we typically recommend sessions within the first 5–14 days. For premature babies, we wait until:
-
Your baby has been discharged from hospital and is medically stable,
-
They have reached around 38–42 weeks corrected gestational age, depending on their size and feeding/sleeping patterns.
Some preemie babies are photographed at 4, 6 or even 8 weeks old, and that’s totally okay! I adapt the session to suit your baby’s age and alertness.
🛡️ Special Care and Safety Measures
With preemies, safety is everything. In my studio:
-
I create a calm, warm environment to help your baby feel secure.
-
Every pose is gentle and simple—your baby is never forced into positions they’re not ready for.
-
I use extra-soft, breathable wraps and support your baby’s body with care.
-
I take breaks as often as needed for feeds, cuddles, or rest.
Having photographed many newborns over the years, I know that each baby sets the pace, especially preemies.

🎨 What Can We Expect From the Session?
You can expect a calm, flexible session designed around your baby’s needs. Here’s what we typically include:
-
Wrapped poses in soft, snug swaddles to help your baby feel comforted.
-
Gentle setups using supportive props like baskets and beds.
-
Parent and family portraits, if you’d like to be included in the session.
-
Plenty of time and space for feeding, settling, and cuddling.
Even if your baby is more alert or less flexible than a full-term newborn, we can still capture beautiful portraits that highlight their strength and personality.
📷 What If My Baby Has Oxygen or Feeding Tubes?
If your baby still has medical equipment like feeding or oxygen tubes, please reach out to discuss. In many cases, we can still proceed safely with your doctor’s guidance. We’ll work together to assess when your baby is ready, and I’m happy to adjust poses or styles as needed.

💕 A Chance to Celebrate a Unique Journey
Premature babies often spend their first weeks in hospital—and while those early days can be overwhelming, your baby’s journey deserves to be honoured with love and beautiful memories. Many parents tell me their photo session was a healing, joyful experience—finally getting to capture their baby at home and thriving.
