Welcoming a new baby into the family is such an exciting time—not only for parents, but also for older siblings. Including brothers and sisters in a newborn photo session is a beautiful way to celebrate this new chapter and capture those precious first bonds. As a newborn photographer here in Leichhardt, Inner West Sydney, I’ve photographed many families with multiple children, and I know just how special those sibling shots are for parents.
But as any parent knows, photographing little ones can sometimes take a little extra preparation. Here are my best tips for preparing siblings so we can capture those natural smiles and sweet moments you’ll treasure forever.
1. Schedule Around Their Routine
I usually recommend parents start the session after the siblings’ nap time. A well-rested child is more likely to be happy, cooperative, and full of energy for those big smiles. The last thing we want is a tired or cranky little one during what should be a fun and memorable experience.
2. Keep It Short and Sweet
Children’s attention spans are often limited, so I plan sibling shots at the beginning of the session. This way, they can shine in their moment with the baby and then either take a break or head home with a parent while we continue the newborn-only setups.
3. Talk About It Beforehand
Let older siblings know what to expect. You might say, “We’re going to take some special photos with the baby today—you get to be the big brother/sister star of the show!” Framing it as something fun and important helps them feel excited and included.
4. Bring Along Comfort Items
Favourite toys, snacks, or a beloved teddy can make siblings feel more at ease in the studio. Sometimes just having that familiar comfort nearby helps them relax and show us their best smiles.
5. Celebrate Their Role as Big Brother or Sister
Making siblings feel special is key. During the session, I’ll guide them gently into safe, simple poses with the baby—like sitting next to the crib or lying down with their new brother or sister. By encouraging them and praising their efforts, we capture genuine moments of love and pride.
