As a newborn photographer in Sydney, I love white noise machines! If you’ve ever been in a newborn photography session at my studio in Leichhardt, Sydney, you’ve probably noticed the soft humming sound in the background. That’s not just for ambience—it’s white noise, and it plays a big role in helping your baby feel calm, secure, and sleepy during their photo session.
In fact, most parents tell me how amazed they are by how well their baby settles, and many ask me where they can get the same white noise machine for home!
So, let’s talk about why white noise is such an essential part of every newborn session—and why it works like magic.

💤 Why Do Newborns Love White Noise?
White noise mimics the comforting sounds babies hear inside the womb—steady, rhythmic, and familiar. In the womb, a baby is constantly surrounded by the sound of blood flow, a beating heart, and muffled external noise.
That’s why, after birth, sudden silence can actually feel unfamiliar or unsettling. White noise provides that soothing background sound that helps babies:
-
Settle faster
-
Sleep more deeply
-
Stay calm during transitions between poses
-
Reduce startle reflexes (the “Moro reflex”)
📸 How It Helps During Your Baby’s Photo Session
Newborn photography is most successful when babies are deeply relaxed and sleepy. At my studio, I use white noise throughout the entire session to create a womb-like atmosphere that helps baby feel safe and content.
Here’s how it supports a smoother session:
-
Eases the transition from awake to asleep
-
Minimises fussiness between poses
-
Creates a consistent environment, even if there are other noises in the studio
-
Soothes older siblings if they’re part of the session too!

🎧 The White Noise Machine I Use (And Where to Get It)
So many parents ask me, “Where did you get that white noise machine?”
I use a white noise machine that plays a deep, consistent sound—no music, no sudden changes—just pure, calming noise. It’s portable, easy to use, and safe for baby.
You can find great options online or in baby stores—just make sure it:
-
Plays a steady sound
-
Has volume control (I always keep mine at a safe, low level)
-
Is portable for travel or pram naps
🏠 Should You Use White Noise at Home Too?
Many parents do—and love it. White noise can help babies sleep longer, especially during the newborn months. Some use it during naps and bedtime to create sleep cues and reduce household noise disturbances.
If you plan to use it at home:
-
Keep the machine at least 1.5–2 metres away from baby’s cot
-
Use it only for sleep times, not 24/7
-
Keep volume low (around 50 decibels or less)

💛 A Little Thing That Makes a Big Difference
White noise might seem like a small detail, but in the world of newborn photography, it’s one of the tools that helps create a calm, gentle, and successful session. From the moment you walk into my studio, I aim to make both baby and parents feel at ease—and white noise plays a beautiful role in that process.
