Bringing a new baby into the world is one of life’s most exciting—and overwhelming—experiences. Between sleepless nights, endless cuddles, feeding schedules, and learning your baby’s cues, preparing for a newborn photography session might feel like just another thing on your to-do list.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful.
As a newborn photographer with over 10 years of experience, I’ve photographed hundreds of beautiful babies, and I’ve learned that the best sessions happen when parents simply relax and trust the process.
Here are 9 things I wish every new parent knew before their newborn photography session.
1. You Don’t Need a “Perfect” Baby
One of the biggest worries parents share is, “What if my baby cries the whole time?”
The truth is, every newborn is different.
Some babies sleep for the entire session, while others need lots of cuddles, feeding breaks, or simply want to be held. That’s completely normal.
Your baby’s comfort always comes first, and we work around their needs—not the other way around.

2. Feeding Breaks Are Part of the Session
Many parents worry they’ll be “holding things up” if their baby needs to feed.
Please don’t.
Newborn sessions are never rushed. I allow plenty of time for feeding, burping, nappy changes, and cuddles because these moments are simply part of life with a newborn.
A calm, content baby is always worth waiting for.
3. It’s Okay If You Feel Exhausted
Let’s be honest—you’ve just had a baby!
If you’re feeling tired, emotional, or running on very little sleep, you’re not alone.
My goal is to create a calm, welcoming environment where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy watching your little one being photographed.
You don’t need to entertain your baby or worry about the next pose—that’s my job.
4. Your Baby’s Safety Comes Before Every Photo
No image is ever worth compromising your baby’s safety.
Every pose is done gently, patiently, and only if your baby is comfortable. Some poses you see online are created using composite editing techniques or aren’t suitable for every baby.
I never force a pose, and I always follow your baby’s lead.

5. Accidents Happen… and That’s Completely Normal
Babies wee.
Babies poo.
Babies spit up.
It happens during almost every newborn session!
Please don’t feel embarrassed—it’s all part of photographing newborns, and I’m always prepared with extra wraps, blankets, and plenty of patience.
6. Simple Is Timeless
Many parents wonder whether they should bring lots of outfits or accessories.
In reality, simple, neutral styling often creates the most timeless images.
Soft wraps, delicate textures, and classic colours keep the focus exactly where it belongs—on your beautiful baby.
Years from now, these photographs will still look elegant and meaningful.
7. Parents Belong in the Photos Too
One thing I hear all the time is:
“I haven’t done my hair.”
“I’m still recovering.”
“I don’t feel camera-ready.”
But one day, your baby will treasure seeing how you looked when you held them in those very first weeks.
These photographs aren’t about perfection—they’re about love, connection, and the beginning of your family’s story.

8. Trust the Process
Every session unfolds a little differently.
Some babies settle straight away, while others need extra time before they’re ready to sleep.
That’s perfectly okay.
Years of experience have taught me how to adapt to each baby while creating a relaxed experience for the whole family.
9. These Tiny Moments Pass Far Too Quickly
Newborns change incredibly fast.
Those tiny fingers, curled-up toes, soft eyelashes, sleepy stretches, and delicate little expressions won’t stay this small for long.
It’s easy to think you’ll always remember every detail, but time has a way of moving much faster than we expect.
Photographs allow you to hold onto these precious memories long after your baby has outgrown your arms.
A Session Designed Around Your Family
My goal isn’t simply to create beautiful photographs—it’s to give your family a relaxed and enjoyable experience during one of the most special chapters of your life.

I’ll take care of the rest.
I can’t wait to help you preserve these beautiful memories that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
