Every day as a newborn photographer brings something new — tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, and the most heartwarming family moments. My studio in Leichhardt, Inner West Sydney, is where I get to capture the pure love and connection that families share with their newest little one.
I thought I’d take you behind the scenes to show what a typical day looks like for me as a Sydney newborn photographer.
Morning: Preparing the Studio
My day usually starts early, preparing the studio to make sure everything is perfect for the session. I adjust the room temperature to keep it warm and cozy, prepare soft wraps, and select beautiful props and backdrops that match the family’s preferred colours and style.
Every detail matters — from the textures of the fabrics to the lighting setup. I want parents to walk in and immediately feel calm, knowing their baby is in safe hands.
Welcoming the Family
When the family arrives, I always start by welcoming them warmly and giving them time to settle in. Newborn sessions can take a few hours, so I want everyone — especially the baby — to feel relaxed.
I chat with the parents about their baby’s routine, feeding times, and any specific poses or colours they love. Siblings are always welcome too! I often start with family or sibling shots first so the little ones can enjoy their special moment before having a break.
The Session: Gentle Posing and Patience
Newborn photography requires lots of patience and a calm energy. Babies lead the session — I work at their pace, whether they need a feed, a cuddle, or a quick nappy change.
For the posed shots, I gently guide the baby into natural, comfortable positions, always prioritising safety. I love capturing a mix of close-up details (tiny toes and eyelashes!) and wider portraits that show just how little they are in your arms.
Parents often comment on how soothing and peaceful the session feels — and that’s exactly my goal.
Afternoon: Editing the Magic
After the session, I upload all the images and begin carefully selecting the best moments. Each photo is gently retouched to enhance its softness and natural beauty while keeping the baby’s skin tones true to life.
Editing is where the story truly comes to life. I love seeing how the collection of images tells the family’s story — the love, the calm, the joy of those first days together.
Delivering Memories That Last a Lifetime
Once the final gallery is ready, I invite families to view their photos and choose how they’d like to preserve them — whether through stunning wall art, keepsake albums, or digital collections. Seeing parents’ reactions when they view their images for the first time is always the highlight of my day.
It’s an incredible feeling knowing that these photographs will become part of a family’s story forever.
