Breastfeeding or Formula for Newborn Photography?

One of the questions I often get from new parents before their session is: “Does it matter if my baby is breastfed or formula-fed for newborn photography?”

The short answer is — both are absolutely fine.

As an experienced newborn photographer here in Sydney, I’ve worked with many, many babies over the years, and I can confidently say that beautiful images can be achieved regardless of how your baby is fed.

Formula-Fed Babies and Sleep

From my experience, formula-fed babies tend to feel fuller for longer periods of time. This often means they can fall into a deeper, longer sleep, which can make posing a little smoother during the session.

A settled, sleepy baby allows me to gently guide them into those classic, curled-up poses that parents love. Because they stay asleep longer, we may move through poses with fewer interruptions.

Breastfed Babies During Sessions

Breastfed babies, on the other hand, may need to feed more frequently, as breast milk is digested more quickly. This simply means we might take a few extra breaks during the session for feeding and settling.

And that’s completely okay.

I always allow plenty of time for newborn sessions, so there is no pressure at all. Feeding breaks are part of the natural flow, and your baby’s comfort always comes first.

My Approach: Baby-Led and Flexible

No matter how your baby is fed, my approach is always the same — gentle, patient, and baby-led.

Every baby is unique. Some breastfed babies sleep deeply, and some formula-fed babies prefer to stay awake a little longer. That’s why I never rely on just one factor. Instead, I work with your baby’s natural rhythm on the day.

Tips for a Smooth Session

To help your session run as smoothly as possible, I usually recommend:

  • Feeding your baby just before or upon arrival
  • Bringing extra milk (if bottle-feeding)
  • Being prepared for a relaxed, unhurried experience

The Most Important Thing

At the end of the day, it’s not about breastfeeding or formula feeding — it’s about creating a calm, comfortable environment where your baby feels safe and settled.

Beautiful newborn images are always possible, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
