Most Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photography Sessions

As a newborn photographer, I get asked a lot of the same questions by excited (and sometimes nervous!) parents before their session. Preparing for a newborn session can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time parents, so I always want my clients to feel comfortable, informed, and relaxed before they arrive at my studio.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions I receive from families booking their newborn photography session at my cozy studio in Leichhardt.

When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Session?

The best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy, ideally in your second or early third trimester. This helps secure availability around your due date.

Newborn sessions are usually photographed within the first 2 weeks after birth, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curled up. Of course, if your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we can always adjust the booking date.

What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos?

The ideal age is between 5–14 days old. During this stage, babies tend to sleep more deeply and settle comfortably into those beautiful curled poses parents love.

However, older newborns can still be photographed beautifully too. Every baby is different, and I always work patiently around your baby’s comfort and needs.

What If My Baby Doesn’t Sleep?

This is probably one of the biggest concerns parents have!

Please don’t stress if your baby stays awake during part of the session. I allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, settling, and breaks. There is never any rush. Some babies sleep deeply, while others need extra comfort — and that is completely normal.

Even awake photos can be absolutely beautiful and full of personality.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

Most of my full newborn sessions take around 3 hours. This allows enough time for feeding, soothing, changing setups, and keeping the session calm and relaxed.

Mini swaddled sessions are usually shorter and focus on simple wrapped poses for baby only.

What Should Parents Bring to the Session?

For breastfeeding mums, just bring yourself and baby essentials. If bottle feeding, please remember to bring enough milk or bottles because hungry babies definitely do not enjoy posing!

Extra nappies, wipes, a dummy (if baby takes one), and spare clothes are always helpful too.

Do Parents and Siblings Join the Photos?

Absolutely. Family and sibling photos are some of the most meaningful images from your session. I always encourage parents to be part of the memories because these moments go by so quickly.

Simple, neutral clothing works beautifully and keeps the focus on your connection with your baby.

Is Your Studio Warm and Comfortable for Babies?

Yes! My studio in Sydney’s Inner West is designed to feel cozy, calm, clean, and comfortable for both babies and parents. The studio is kept warm for newborns, with plenty of time and patience throughout the session.

There is also easy street parking nearby, making access simple for families arriving with a new baby.

Final Thoughts

I know preparing for a newborn session can feel like a lot, especially in those early newborn days when everyone is tired. My goal is always to create a relaxed experience where parents can simply slow down and enjoy the moment while I capture these precious memories for them.

If you have questions before your session, please never hesitate to ask. I am always happy to help guide families through the process so they feel comfortable and prepared.
