One of the most common questions I hear from new parents before their newborn photography session is:
“Should we bring extra milk for our baby?”
My answer is always:
Yes, absolutely!
Whether your baby is breastfed or formula-fed, bringing extra milk to your newborn session is one of the best ways to help your baby stay comfortable, settled, and happy throughout the experience.
Newborn photography sessions can take several hours, and your little one may need extra feeds along the way. This is completely normal and expected.
Newborn Babies Feed Frequently
During the first few weeks of life, babies have tiny stomachs and need to feed often.
Even if your baby has just had a full feed before arriving at the studio, they may want another feed during the session. This can happen because:
- Being gently moved and wrapped can make babies feel relaxed and sleepy.
- Babies naturally use feeding as a way to feel comforted and secure.
- Growth spurts can increase their feeding needs.
- A newborn session is a new environment with lots of new sensations.
A hungry baby is not a problem—it is simply your baby communicating what they need.

Feeding Breaks Are Part of the Session
Some parents worry that stopping for feeds will interrupt the photography session.
Please don’t worry.
Feeding breaks are a normal and important part of every newborn session at Capture The Moment By Ana Photography.
I never rush babies. If your little one needs a feed, we take a break.
Your baby’s comfort always comes first.
During these breaks, parents can also enjoy precious moments of cuddling, soothing, and bonding with their baby. These quiet moments are part of the newborn experience too.
How Much Extra Milk Should You Bring?
It is always better to bring more than you think you will need.
For formula-fed babies, I recommend bringing enough formula for the entire time you are away from home, plus some extra just in case.
For breastfeeding mums, your baby may simply need additional comfort feeds during the session, which is completely normal.
If you are expressing breast milk, bringing an extra bottle can also be helpful.
Remember, it is always better to have extra milk available than to wish you had packed more.

A Full Tummy Helps Create Beautiful Photos
A well-fed baby is usually more relaxed and comfortable, which can help them settle into those beautiful sleepy newborn poses.
After feeding, many babies naturally relax, curl up, and fall into a peaceful sleep—allowing me to capture those tiny details parents love:
- Their little fingers and toes.
- Their sweet sleepy expressions.
- Their delicate features.
- Those beautiful newborn curls.
Of course, every baby is different, and some babies may need more time and comfort than others.
That is perfectly okay.
Don’t Worry About Your Baby’s Routine Changing
Many parents worry that feeding their baby more during the session will affect their routine.
Please don’t stress.
A newborn photography session is a special experience, and your baby’s needs may be slightly different on the day.
Keeping your baby happy and comfortable during the session is the priority.

What Else Should You Bring?
Along with extra milk, I recommend bringing:
- Extra nappies.
- Baby wipes.
- A dummy/pacifier if your baby uses one.
- Any comfort items your baby loves.
- A spare outfit for yourselves (just in case!).
And most importantly—bring your beautiful baby exactly as they are.
Your Baby Is Always the Boss
Every newborn session is different because every baby is different.
Some babies sleep from beginning to end.
Some babies need multiple feeds and cuddles.
Some babies simply want to be close to their parents.
All of these things are normal.
My approach is always baby-led. I follow your baby’s cues and allow plenty of time for feeding, burping, changing, and comforting.
There is no need to feel rushed or worried.
Relax and Enjoy the Experience
A newborn photography session is not just about creating beautiful images. It is also about enjoying this special moment with your baby before they grow and change so quickly.
By bringing extra milk, you are giving your baby the best chance to feel comfortable and settled throughout their session.
At Capture The Moment By Ana Photography, I create a warm, calm, and welcoming environment where families can relax while I capture these precious early memories.
So pack that extra bottle, bring plenty of nappies, and don’t worry if your baby needs a few extra feeds.
A happy baby always comes first—and the beautiful photographs will follow.
