One of the first things parents notice when they walk into my newborn photography studio is how warm it feels.
If you’re thinking, “Wow, it’s cosy in here!”—you’re absolutely right.
Many parents ask why I keep the studio warmer than a typical room, and the answer is simple: warmth helps newborn babies feel safe, comfortable, and more likely to settle into a deep sleep.
It’s not just a photography trick—there’s science behind it.
Newborn Babies Can’t Regulate Their Body Temperature Well
Unlike adults, newborn babies are still developing the ability to regulate their body temperature.
During the first few weeks of life, they lose heat much more quickly because they have:
- A larger body surface area compared to their size.
- Very little body fat to keep them warm.
- An immature temperature regulation system.
This means babies can become chilly much faster than adults, especially when they’re undressed for photographs.
Keeping the studio comfortably warm helps them maintain a stable body temperature while they’re safely posed or wrapped.

Warmth Reminds Babies of the Womb
For nine months, your baby lived in one of the warmest and safest environments imaginable.
Inside the womb, the temperature remained consistently warm and comforting.
After birth, the outside world feels very different.
A warm studio helps recreate some of that familiar comfort, making it easier for babies to relax and settle. Combined with gentle handling and soft white noise, the environment encourages many newborns to drift into a peaceful sleep.
A Comfortable Baby Is a Sleepy Baby
Have you ever noticed how babies often fall asleep after a warm bath or while being cuddled against your chest?
Warmth naturally encourages relaxation.
When babies are comfortable, they’re less likely to become unsettled by feeling cold. A relaxed baby usually means:
- Longer periods of restful sleep.
- Gentler transitions between poses.
- Less startling or sudden movements.
- A calmer, more enjoyable session for everyone.
Of course, every baby is different, and some need extra cuddles or feeding breaks—and that’s perfectly normal
Why the Studio Feels Warmer Than Your Home
Many parents wonder if the studio is too warm.
The answer is no—it’s carefully maintained at a temperature that’s comfortable for babies, especially when they’re wearing minimal clothing or wrapped in soft fabrics.
While adults may feel a little warm, babies generally feel much more comfortable in this environment.
You’re welcome to wear light, comfortable clothing, and I always have water available to help you stay comfortable during your session.
Warmth Is Only One Part of Helping Babies Sleep
Although warmth plays an important role, it’s not the only factor that helps babies settle.
During every newborn session, I also create a calm and soothing environment by:
- Using gentle white noise.
- Allowing plenty of time for feeding and burping.
- Taking breaks whenever your baby needs them.
- Moving slowly and carefully between poses.
- Following your baby’s cues at all times.
There’s never any pressure for your baby to sleep immediately. Every session is guided by your baby’s comfort and needs.

Safety Always Comes First
While warmth is beneficial, it’s equally important that babies don’t become too hot.
As an experienced newborn photographer, I closely monitor each baby’s comfort throughout the session. If your baby shows any signs of becoming too warm or unsettled, I adjust the environment, offer breaks, or wrap them differently.
Their wellbeing is always my highest priority.
Every decision I make during your session is based on creating a safe, gentle, and comfortable experience.
It’s More Than Just Beautiful Photos
Professional newborn photography is about much more than choosing pretty props or pressing a camera shutter.
Behind every peaceful sleeping portrait is careful preparation, years of experience, and an understanding of what helps babies feel calm, secure, and comfortable.
Creating the right environment allows me to work patiently and safely while capturing the tiny details you’ll treasure forever.
