One of the most common worries I hear from parents is,
“My baby is already over 6 weeks old — is it too late for newborn photos?”
The answer is simple: not at all.
As an experienced newborn photographer based in Sydney, Australia, I have photographed many, many babies who were older than 6 weeks. While these sessions are a little different from the classic sleepy newborn sessions, they can still be absolutely beautiful.
Older Babies Are Just… Different
By the time babies are over 6 weeks old, they are usually:
-
More awake and alert
-
Stronger in their movements
-
Less flexible than younger newborns
This means traditional posed newborn photography may not always be possible — and that’s okay. The key is knowing how to adapt.

My Secret: Go With the Flow
When photographing older babies, my approach is very simple: I go with the flow.
Instead of trying to force poses that no longer feel comfortable for your baby, I follow their cues and work with what they naturally enjoy. This creates a calmer experience and more genuine images.
Why Wrapping Works So Well
The best and most effective technique for babies over 6 weeks old is wrapping.
Wrapped babies feel:
-
Secure
-
Calm
-
Comforted
Wrapping helps reduce the startle reflex and allows babies to settle more easily, even when they are wide awake. It also gives us the opportunity to create beautiful, styled portraits without needing complex poses.
So Many Beautiful Styles With Wraps
One of the best things about wrapped sessions is the variety of looks we can create. By changing:
-
Wrap colours and textures
-
Layering techniques
-
Props and backgrounds
we can achieve many different styles within one session. Parents are often surprised by how versatile and elegant wrapped portraits can be — and they absolutely love the final results.
Expressions You’ll Treasure
Older babies often gift us with something younger newborns don’t — eye contact and expressions. Tiny smiles, curious looks, and those wide, soulful eyes can make your images even more meaningful.
It’s Never “Too Late”
While the 1–4 week stage is ideal for fully posed newborn photography, babies over 6 weeks can still be photographed in a way that is:
-
Safe
-
Comfortable
-
Beautiful
With experience, patience, and the right techniques — especially wrapping — we can still create timeless images you will cherish forever.
If your baby is already over 6 weeks old, please don’t worry. There is always a way to capture this special stage 🤍
