One of the most common questions parents ask me is,
“When is the best time to book a newborn photography session?”
For my photography style — posed newborn photography — I always recommend scheduling your session when your baby is between 1 and 4 weeks old. This short window makes a beautiful difference in both the experience and the final images.
Let me explain why.
My Style: Posed Newborn Photography
My work focuses on gently posed newborn portraits, where babies are carefully positioned into timeless poses and often photographed on beautiful props, such as little baskets, bowls, and soft blankets. These poses require babies to be calm, sleepy, and comfortable, and safety is always my top priority.
Because of this, age plays a very important role.
Sleepier Babies = Smoother Sessions
Babies between 1–4 weeks old tend to be much sleepier and more content during their sessions. Deep sleep allows me to gently transition your baby from one pose to another without disturbing them too much.
Older babies are often more alert, curious, and sensitive to movement, which can make posed photography more challenging.
More Flexibility for Gentle Posing
In the first few weeks of life, newborns are naturally more flexible and still love being curled up, just like they were in the womb. This makes it possible to create those classic, elegant poses that parents often fall in love with.
As babies grow, they begin to stretch out more, become less flexible, and may feel uncomfortable in certain poses — which limits the posing options available.
Tiny Details You’ll Want to Remember
During the 1–4 week stage, babies are still wonderfully tiny. Their delicate features, curled hands, wrinkly toes, and petite size fit perfectly into props like baskets and bowls.
As the weeks pass, babies grow quickly — sometimes right before our eyes — and those extra-small details naturally start to change.
Older Babies Are Beautiful — Just Different
Of course, older babies are still absolutely beautiful to photograph. However, they are usually:
-
More awake
-
Less flexible
-
More aware of their surroundings
This often means fewer posed images and a more lifestyle or awake-style session instead.

Booking Early Makes All the Difference
Because the ideal window is short, I always recommend booking your newborn session as soon as you know you’d like to work with me. This allows me to reserve space around your due date and ensures we don’t miss that precious 1–4 week stage.
A Calm, Baby-Led Experience
No matter your baby’s age, I always work gently, patiently, and at your baby’s pace. Every session includes time for feeding, cuddles, and settling — because your baby’s comfort always comes first.
If you’re dreaming of soft, sleepy, beautifully posed newborn portraits, the 1–4 week window truly is the perfect time to capture them 🤍
