Why Every Baby Is Different During Their Newborn Photography Session

A baby boy was posed with teddy bears on blue background for his newborn photo session at Capture The Moment By Ana.

One of the questions I hear most often from parents is:

“Will my baby sleep like the babies I see in your portfolio?”

The honest answer is… every baby is different.

As a newborn photographer with over 10 years of experience, I’ve photographed hundreds of beautiful little babies, and no two sessions have ever been exactly the same. Some babies sleep soundly from start to finish, while others are wide awake, love to stretch, or simply want extra cuddles.

And do you know what?

That’s completely normal.

Every newborn has their own little personality, and my job is to work with your baby—not expect your baby to work around me.

Every Baby Has Their Own Personality

Even in their first few weeks of life, babies already have their own unique personalities.

Some babies are naturally:

  • Deep sleepers.
  • Curious and alert.
  • Sensitive to movement.
  • Easily startled.
  • Happy to be wrapped.
  • More comfortable being cuddled.

There is no “right” way for a baby to behave during their session.

Your baby’s individuality is part of what makes their photographs so special.

Age Can Make a Difference

Although newborn photography is ideal during the first 1–4 weeks of life, babies develop incredibly quickly during those early weeks.

A one-week-old baby often sleeps more deeply than a baby who is five or six weeks old.

Older newborns may:

  • Stay awake for longer.
  • Stretch more often.
  • Be more aware of their surroundings.
  • Prefer wrapped poses over unwrapped poses.

That’s why I always adapt each session to suit your baby’s age and comfort level.

Feeding Plays a Big Role

A well-fed baby is usually a happier, more settled baby.

However, every baby feeds differently.

Some babies enjoy one long feed before the session begins, while others prefer smaller, more frequent feeds throughout the session.

That’s perfectly okay.

I allow plenty of time for feeding breaks because your baby’s needs always come first.

Birth Experiences Can Influence Your Baby

Every baby’s journey into the world is different.

Some babies arrive early, some arrive late, some have a long labour, while others arrive quickly.

These experiences can sometimes affect how settled or sleepy they feel during those first few weeks.

Every baby adjusts to life outside the womb at their own pace, and I always take that into account during the session.

Temperament Matters Too

Some babies simply love being wrapped snugly because it reminds them of the comfort of the womb.

Others prefer to have their little hands free or enjoy stretching between poses.

Instead of forcing every baby into the same routine, I watch their cues carefully and gently adapt the session to what makes them feel most comfortable.

Some Babies Sleep… Some Babies Don’t

Parents often apologise if their baby doesn’t sleep.

Please don’t.

Awake photographs can be just as beautiful.

Those bright little eyes, tiny expressions, curious looks, and gentle stretches tell the unique story of your baby during these precious first weeks.

Sometimes these become the family’s favourite images.

Flexibility Is Part of Every Session

No two sessions ever follow exactly the same timeline.

Some babies settle immediately.

Others need:

  • Extra feeding breaks.
  • More cuddles.
  • Additional wrapping.
  • A little extra time to fall asleep.
  • Gentle rocking or soothing.

That’s exactly why newborn sessions are never rushed.

Patience is one of the most important parts of newborn photography.

Comparing Babies Doesn’t Help

It’s easy to scroll through social media and wonder why another baby seemed to sleep perfectly throughout their session.

The truth is, you only see the finished photographs.

You don’t see the feeding breaks, cuddles, nappy changes, comforting, or waiting in between.

Every gallery represents hours of patience, care, and adapting to each baby’s needs.

Your Baby Leads the Session

One of my favourite things about newborn photography is that babies are always the boss.

If your baby needs feeding, we stop.

If your baby wants cuddles, we cuddle.

If your baby isn’t comfortable in a pose, we simply move on to another one.

Following your baby’s cues creates a safe, relaxed experience and allows us to capture beautiful, natural images without ever forcing the moment.

Every Baby Is Perfect Just as They Are

Your baby doesn’t need to sleep through the whole session.

They don’t need to fit into every pose or behave like someone else’s baby.

Whether they’re sleepy, curious, cuddly, or wide awake, they are perfect just as they are.

Those tiny yawns, little stretches, sweet smiles, and curious eyes are all part of their unique story—and that’s exactly what makes your photographs so meaningful.

Celebrating Your Baby’s Individual Story

At Capture The Moment By Ana Photography, I believe every newborn deserves to be photographed with patience, kindness, and care.

My role is never to expect your baby to fit a certain mould. Instead, I create a calm, safe, and welcoming environment where your little one can simply be themselves.

Because the most beautiful photographs aren’t about perfection—they’re about capturing the unique personality, love, and precious moments that make your baby one of a kind.

I can’t wait to help you preserve these memories for your family to treasure for generations.
