Feeding time is a beautiful bonding moment between you and your baby. But once the feed is finished, there’s one small step that plays a big role in your newborn’s comfort — burping.
Many new parents wonder if burping is really necessary. The answer is yes — especially during the early newborn weeks.
Newborns Swallow Air While Feeding
Whether your baby is breastfed or bottle-fed, it’s completely normal for them to swallow air while feeding. This trapped air can sit in their tiny tummy and cause:
-
Discomfort
-
Fussiness
-
Squirming or crying
-
Difficulty settling or sleeping
Burping helps release that air and makes your baby feel much more comfortable.

A More Settled, Happier Baby
A baby who hasn’t been burped may appear unsettled even after a good feed. You might notice your baby:
-
Pulling away from the breast or bottle
-
Arching their back
-
Crying shortly after feeding
A gentle burp can make a world of difference. Once the air is released, babies often relax, settle faster, and sleep more peacefully.
Helps Reduce Spit-Ups
Burping can also help reduce the amount of milk your baby brings back up. While some spit-up is very normal, releasing trapped air can minimise pressure in the tummy and make feeds more comfortable overall.
Why Burping Matters During a Newborn Photography Session
From a newborn photography perspective, burping is especially important. A baby who is comfortable after a feed is:
-
More relaxed
-
Sleepier
-
Easier to settle
This makes it much easier to gently pose and photograph your baby safely and calmly. That’s why I always allow plenty of time for feeding and burping during my sessions — there is never any rushing.

Every Baby Is Different
Some babies burp quickly, while others need a little more time. Some may burp during a feed, others only afterward. All of this is completely normal.
If your baby doesn’t burp right away, don’t worry — gentle patience is key.
A Small Step That Makes a Big Difference
Burping may seem like a small part of your baby’s routine, but it plays an important role in keeping your newborn comfortable, settled, and happy.
A comfortable baby is a calm baby — and a calm baby makes everything a little easier 🤍
