At Capture The Moment By Ana, I often get asked when the best time is to book a posed newborn photography session. While every baby is unique, posed newborn photography is best done when babies are between 1 and 4 weeks old. During this short window, newborns are naturally sleepier, more flexible, and easier to gently pose, allowing us to create those timeless, peaceful images many parents love.
Based in Leichhardt, Sydney Inner West, my studio is designed to provide a calm, comfortable space for both babies and parents during this precious stage.
Sleepier Babies Make Posing Easier
In the first few weeks of life, newborns tend to sleep deeply and for longer periods. This sleepiness is ideal for posed photography, as it allows babies to be gently positioned without disturbance. Once babies grow older, they become more alert and curious about the world around them, which often means they are awake for longer stretches during sessions.
Sleepy babies help us achieve classic, peaceful poses while keeping the experience relaxed and stress-free.

Natural Flexibility in the Early Weeks
Newborns between 1 and 4 weeks old still naturally curl into womb-like positions. Their bodies are soft and flexible, making it easier to safely create classic poses such as the bum up pose, side pose, and chin on hands. As babies grow, they begin to stretch out, become less flexible, and may resist being positioned.
This is completely normal development—but it does make posed newborn photography more challenging after the early weeks.
Older Babies Are More Awake & Expressive
While older babies are absolutely beautiful to photograph, they are often more awake and alert. This stage is wonderful for eye contact and lifestyle-style sessions, but it can limit the variety of posed images we can achieve. Older newborns may also startle more easily and prefer to move freely rather than remain settled in posed positions.
For families hoping for those classic, curled-up newborn portraits, earlier sessions offer the best results.

A Calm, Baby-Led Approach
At my Leichhardt studio, every session is baby-led and safety-focused. Even within the 1–4 week window, I follow each baby’s cues and allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and settling. My goal is to create a calm experience while capturing beautiful, timeless images.
Planning Ahead for Your Newborn Session
Because this ideal timeframe passes quickly, I recommend booking your newborn session during pregnancy. This allows flexibility once your baby arrives and ensures we can schedule your session within those first few weeks.

Timeless Images You’ll Treasure Forever
Posed newborn photography captures a fleeting stage that changes so quickly. Those tiny curled poses, sleepy expressions, and delicate details are best preserved in the first month of life. Photographing your baby between 1 and 4 weeks old gives you the best chance of achieving the classic, timeless newborn portraits you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
If you’re looking for posed newborn photography in Sydney Inner West, I would love to welcome you to my studio.
